Advent 2022: Jesus, God's Promised Saviour

This December, we will see how the birth of Jesus fulfils God’s extraordinary promises to send a saviour into the world for us. Two sermons are on Old Testament prophecies, and two are from the Gospel narratives. In each case, they show us why the coming of Jesus is such good news for all of us, and what it looks like to trust in him.

In Luke 2, the Shepherds are the first to hear the news of the birth of Jesus: “ 11  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you.” But the birth of this child was announced many years before, notably by Isaiah in these verses. This Child is none other than the Mighty God who comes to bring light in the darkness, to set his people free and rule over them in peace and justice. When the Wise men arrive in Jerusalem looking for the new-born King of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-12) the religious leaders turn to this prophecy to identify where the Messiah would be born. Micah not only identifies insignificant Bethlehem as his birthplace, but also describes the Messiah as God’s Shepherd Ruler. He is the one who comes to save his people from across the whole earth, giving them true peace and security. Do we know Jesus, the Shepherd-King for ourselves? Are we continuing to find our peace and security in Him?
