Finding Life

The “I am” statements spoken by Jesus in John’s gospel are among the best known and loved verses within the whole Bible. On seven occasions in John’s gospel, Jesus uses the phrase, “I am”, to explain who he is, why he came, and what he offers to those who choose to follow him.

In the introduction to his gospel John writes, “From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another” (John 1:16). All of the “I am” statements reflect this sense of the fulness of life that Christ’s offers. In almost all the contexts in which Jesus made these declarations what he said was disputed. The same is true today.

Yet in these deeply personal sayings Christ offers us himself, and through receiving and responding to his words, we receive Christ, and all that he offers. We find life.

John 6: 25-59 and Exodus 16: 1-18 Finding what truly satisfies - Jim Gladstone (Video)
Morning Service, Sunday, January 9, 2022
Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty’ (John 6:35). Coming to Jesus and believing in him are necessary steps in finding what truly satisfies. Both the manna in the desert (Exodus 16) and the feeding of the 5000 (John 6) were divine provisions of nourishment, but only Jesus truly satisfies our spiritual need. This passage highlights the seal of approval which Jesus has from God his Father, and challenges us to consider what coming to him and believing in him really means. As we respond to the open invitation to come to him (6:35) we realise that we are also drawn by God (6:44) who is saving us by his grace. The sermon concludes with a challenge to come to Christ and to worship God for the ‘incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.’

Painting a picture that was familiar to His hearers then and incorporating a simple aspect that resonates with us today Jesus said I Am the Door. The way into the sheep fold was often guarded by the shepherd himself being the door. The only way in was through the shepherd and in being the door he provided that access, but also protection for the sheep. For two legged sheep like us, Jesus is The door to life which is abundant, it is through him we find salvation.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26). In this extraordinary story, Jesus promises resurrection (life after death) and eternal life (the resurrection life of God in us) to those who believe in him. Jesus demonstrates both his power and authority to make this promise by raising Lazarus from the dead. As well as giving the assurance of our hope in the resurrection to come, this passage challenges us not to limit the possibilities and power of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We begin by discussing what, “Finding Life” might mean to a young person. “Fruit” in the term “fruitful life” is suggested to be, “The Fruit of The Spirit” and is contrasted with “the acts of the sinful nature” (Gal 5). Attention is now directed to Jesus’ statement, “I AM The True Vine” in John 15 and His teaching on the intimate relationship between Him and His disciples. His call and command to, “remain in Me” is key to this relationship, and is discussed in detail. The amazing parallel Jesus draws between His relationship with His Father and His relationship with us is presented. This shows that keeping His commandment to, “love each other as I have loved you” is the key to living a fruitful life! The conclusion is drawn that, “Finding a Fruitful Life” is crucial, as it is the only kind of life worth living!
